In the architectural life of Kharkiv, the 1920s - 1930s were marked by a rise in construction activity due to the formation of the government center there. In 1923 the contest for the planning of the territory of the former university campus was announced. As a result, the project of the redevelopment scheme by architect V. Trotsenko was approved. The administrative and governmental center consisted of such buildings as the House of State Industry (architects S. Serafimov, S. Kravets, M. Felger, 1925-1928); the House of Design Organizations (architects S. Serafimov and M. Zandberg-Serafimova, 1928- 1935); the House of Cooperation (architects O. Dmitriev, O. Munz, 1929), The Building of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Ukraine (architect J. Steinberg, 1932). Construction of a residential area in the quarters behind the Derzhprom began in 1926-27. There were built dwellings and complexes "Tabachnyk-Knyzhnyk" (1927 - 1931); "Chervonyi Brodylnyk" (1926 - 1928); "Nowe zhyttia" (New Life) (1926 - 1930); "Kofok" (1928), "Five for Three" (the late 1920s); "Chervonyi Promyslovets" (Red Industrialist) (1929 - 1930), "Chervonyi Himik" (Red Chemist, the late 1920s), "Cheronyi Drukar"(House of Professional Workers, 1930s), "Chervonyi Partyzan" (Red Guerrilla, mid-1930s), "House of Specialists" (1934 - 1936), etc. The residential dwelling was served by a network of services, including a cinema hall, two children's centers, three secondary schools, and a kitchen factory. Let's look in more detail at the two modernist residential complexes located behind Derzhprom - "Chervonyi Promyslovets" (Red Industrialist) and "House of Specialists". The residential complex "Chervonyi Promyslovets" on Pravda Ave. 5, was built for employees of the Derzhprom in 1930 (by architect S. Kravets). This complex consists of two buildings with different entrances and a shared huge courtyard park. The facades of the first one face Nezalezhnosti (Independence) Avenue, J. Zoifer and R. Rolland streets, the facades of the last one - face R. Rolland and B. Chichibabin streets. The complex is multi-storied: the sections located at the corners are seven-storied, and the others, overlooking Nezalezhnosti Avenue and B. Chichibabina street - five-storied. There are elevators in the halls of the seven-story sections. This is a perimeter building with household services (on the ground floor provided space for a kindergarten, school, etc.) that covers almost the entire quarter. All apartments in the complex "Red Industrialist" have three to five rooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The "House of Specialists" on Pravda Avenue, 7 was built in 1934-1936s (by architect L. Lemysh). This residential complex was built for employees of the Design Organizations and Cooperation Houses. The House of Specialists, as well as the Red Industrialist, covers a whole quarter, but its design is much more modern. The house has 26 entrances and consists of four separate buildings. All structures face Pravda and Lenin Avenues, B. Chichibabina, and R. Rolland streets. The shape of the building plan looks like two letters P, turned backs, and divided by two parallel linear buildings. The buildings of the complex have five to seven floors. Elevators are installed in the main halls. As a rule, each stairwell leads to two flats, with ventilation, the bathroom, and the toilet provided. On the ground floor of the buildings overlooking Pravda Avenue, there are built-in stores; there also consumer services along Nezalezhnosti Avenue and R. Rolland street. Kateryna Didenko
