House named after Dzerzhinsky
This seven-story residential complex at Pushkinska, 54 is a constructivist building. It was designed by architect G.Yanovytsky and E. Lymar, and was built in 1931 for employees of the Tank plant named after Malyshev. Hryhoriy Yanovytsky was also the author of the futuristic magazine New Generation. It had been built on the site of the Kaplunov Church after it had been blown up by the Bolsheviks in the 1920s. In Soviet times, on the ground floor, there was a large department store that was loved by Kharkiv residents. These days the found floor is occupied by shops and cafes. Many famous people lived in this house, according to memorial plaques. From 1936 to 1940, Mikhail Koshkin, the creator of the legendary T-34 tank, lived in this house. And in 1951-1978 Alexander Morozov, who was a famous design engineer, also dwelled there. This large dwelling dominates the surrounding buildings with its monumentality. Diverse volumes of the living area are based on a powerful rectangular stylobate. The walls are decorated with semicircular balconies. The building is definitely one of the best architectural monuments of constructivism.
