Sandwiched between buildings
The Red Banker HouseThe house of employees of the State Bank of the USSR called Red Banker (now it is Alchevskikh street, 6)t was built in 1928 by civil engineer V. Estrovych. It is an eclectic building with features of Ukrainian architecture, baroque, and modernism. This brick building is sectional, five-storied with a basement. The closeness to other buildings and the desire to make the most of its plot have led to a rather complex configuration of the architectural volume of the object. This residential dwelling is sandwiched between tall buildings, stretched deep into the quarter and H-shaped. The narrow building plot was compensated by the cour d'honneur looking at Alchevskych street. The doorways of four sections of the house, consisting of 2, 3, and 4-room apartments, pass into the cour d'honneur. On the axis of it there is an arched passage to the yard. Architect and art critic G. Lebedev wrote that it was the unfavorable location of the building and the complexity of its volume configuration that forced the architect to apply various methods of apartment planning and to use numerous protrusions and ledges of it. But all this only partially allowed to create equal living conditions - some apartments still have not convenient planning, proper insulation, and aeration. The symmetrical facade is characterized by the plasticity of bay windows and balconies, a picturesque outline of roofs with gables and turrets. The motifs of the Renaissance, Gothic (arrow windows), Baroque (curved gables, roof hall), and the modernist way of its interpretation are intertwined. The tile-covered course belt between the fourth and fifth floors reminiscent of typical Ukrainian wooden church elements. In 1949, the architect O. Kasyanov wrote on this: “Fascinated by the study of traditional Ukrainian architecture, the architect tried to give the building distinctive national features. However, he did not fully succeed; details of Ukrainian architecture turned out to be hidden by the features of modernism." It has to be said about high-quality construction works - street terazzo facades and brick masonry in the yard, mosaic stairs and stairwells with massive fences of strict pattern, painted doors imitating the stained oak. The building is listed as an architectural monument of local significance (protection number №12, 30.04.1980). Denis Vitchenko
